Today is a momentous occasion because it is the 5th year this blog has been running on my JLSNet Website! Over these past 5 years the blog has evolved from being a simple log of my university project to what it is today, a collection of random geeky projects, special events and other assorted ponderings.
Just for fun I am going to start a little quiz to try and encourage people to read back through my blog. There are 5 questions (one for each year of this blogs life), the first person to post all the correct answers, along with supporting URL links, in the comments below will win a special prize!
1) What is the closing quote at the bottom of my very first blog entry?
2) What was I doing to avoid studying for my Theoretical Computer Science B Exam?
3) What are my feelings towards travelling on the London Underground Trains?
4) On what date did Claire post her first entry to this blog?
5) How many people voted “YES” for Craig to have his Dreadlocks cut off?
Tip: Use the Search Box and Archive Navigation Menu.
The blog has had its up’s and down’s with varied spurts of lots of entries followed by dry seasons of silence. Of late I have neglected the blog a little, it has been pushed aside in favour of one of my more recent hobbies which is researching my family history and finding out about my ancestors (aka Genealogy). However, I have realised that this blog, in a way, may become my legacy for future descendants of mine who want to know about me and what I have done… Huuurm scary, what does my blog say about me?!

I have added a couple of new pages to the JLSNet main site.
The first page being a fault finding guide to help troubleshoot ADSL connections, the second page is again a fault finding guide to help troubleshoot ISDN connections, both are aimed at users of Cisco routers.
Both these guides have been written to help users logically perform a series of simple tests to diagnose various steps in the connection stage, including Layer 1 physical checks, Layer 2 data link debgug checks, Layer 3 network address checks.

Following my previous post in which I discussed the great opportunity to interlink blogs and mobile text messaging I have now implemented a very basic solution on this blog.
Setup: I used a Enfora SA GSM Modem and along with SQL2GSM Software was able to implement a simple forwarding rule, which, when a Text Message is recieved with a prefix of “blog”, will interact with my WordPress Database to add a blog comment.
How to Comment: Blog readers can send a text to +447913694107 starting with the word “blog” followed by the blog post ID (end number of post url), a colon and then the comment message, for example:
“blog 126:Hello World”
The text message above will post a comment to this blog (entry 126). You will then shortly receive a “Thank you for your comment.” reply and your text message will appear in the blog comments.
It is still in very basic testing stage at the moment but please feel free to give it a whirl, I would love to read your comments both via mobile text messages or by commenting the standard way below.

Over this past month I have overcome one of my greatest fears… databases (no, not big leaves!). Ever since my Adv-GNVQ course in IT at College where I was and tortured and angst-ridden by Microsoft Access I have steered well clear of databases.
Where previously the JLSNet website ran using flat text files, I finally plucked up the courage to look at MySQL and create a simple content management system for the website, it was soooooo easy, I do not understand why I did not do it ages ago! It did not take me too long to migrate all the old text files, with a little parsing help (thanks Ben!), and so now the majority of the JLSNet website runs from a MySQL database.
This new found excitement for databases also spurred me on to move my blog completely from MSN Spaces onto JLSNet. Initially I had grand ideas of writing my own blog management system, but on discovering the free PHP blog engine from WordPress, an amazingly powerful, but super simple to use management system for web logs, I decided to use that instead. I have now migrated all my old MSN Spaces blog entries and comments and old JLSNet news and forum comments into this brand new WordPress blog on the JLSNet website, I have also crafted a template to make it fit in with the rest of the website.
I am however going to keep the MSN Spaces blog going, I have set up WordPress to email MSN Spaces a snippet of the blog and a link each time I publish a new entry, I have done this just so it will update the little star on my MSN Messenger Card as I add a new blog entry.
What I have learnt recently: MySQL databases are not that scary and SQL statements can be easy used to move data around between tables, for example:
INSERT INTO table_jlsnet (title, blog, comment)
SELECT title, blog, comment
FROM table_msnspaces
WHERE Year(date) > 2004;
I can’t believe I have an SQL statement in my blog, still, not quite as geeky as Alli’s AutoCAD code!

Following the recent mergers of various large companies, ATI and AMD; BT and Yahoo; Friends Reunited and ITV; Skype and Ebay; NTL, Telewest and Virgin Mobile; comes the merger between JLSNet and MSN Spaces! Yes it is true, honest! Sadly no money has exchanged hands and I am not totally sure Microsoft’s solicitors (read: lawyers) know about the affair. In actual fact what has happened is that the JLSNet website now pulls the RSS feed from my MSN Spaces weblog and outputs it in the news section of the site (including this entry!).
JLNset has also had its 5th facelift. Whilst keeping with the general look and feel of the previous design the new coding is 100% valid XHTML 1.1 and CSS 2 and the main site templates are compliant with Section 508 and are WCAG double-A rating, for those of you less technical… it looks pretty!
I have a few more tweaks to make to the site (I always do!) and then I really must start thinking about updating and adding some more content, namely some more Cisco Configuration articles. I am also considering whether to put some of my family history research up on the site, as it would be a great way to share my findings and possibly meet new relations.

In my ’spare’ time I have been geeking a little and have been able to upgrade the JLSNet site forum. The new forum runs using on the phpBB package and replaces my previous noddy attempt at a forum (for history’s sake, I have imported all comments from my old forum to the new). I have crafted the forum with the JLSNet look and feel by editing templates and styles to integrate it fully with the rest of the website. It is hoped that this forum would become a useful tool to help the simpler Cisco users get a little help, discuss problems, provide tips, and express ideas. I have also cleaned up some of the sites images.

It is finally here! A solution to configure a Cisco router with a modem connected to the AUX port in order to dial an old dialup ISP. This config is something I have been trying for ages, but got totally confused each time I tried it! Here it is, as simple as I could get it! Normally when you are dialing an ISP you do not want to be engaged, but on this one occasion I am glad to be engaged… to my wonderful girlfriend Claire Hayward!!

JLSNet is going further up in the world, instead of being hosted from a little Intel server on the floor of my mates house (thank you Ben!), I have finally loosened the purse strings and splashed out for JLSNet to be hosted by a proper host, www.ewonline.co.uk. This of course has many advantages… more bandwidth, faster, upto date MySQL/PHP/Apache, web email accounts, less hammering of my mates internet connection and less downtime. There may be some teathing problems as I transfer the site across, but things are already looking better. Some pages that may come soon… Cisco ISP Dialup config, Cisco NAT on a stick config.

Getting increasinly boared with people asking me the same questions… “Please can you send me free CCNA questions or papers?”, “Please can you send me the source code to your project?”, “I would like to contribute towards this project for further developments?”, “I am looking into doing a project on networking, please can you give me a title/topic?” I have decided to put together a FAQ page, I have attempted to answer the questions as fully and fairly as I can in an attempt to stop any further re-accurances! I am, on the other hand, glad to see that many people are visited and interested in the site.

When Cisco originally released the Catalyst 2924 switch it was manufactured with only 4MB of DRAM and no support for VLAN trunking. Due to customer demand Cisco soon released the same switch with 8MB of DRAM to support the larger IOS version 12 images, and also added hardware support on switch ports for VLAN trunking. The problem is Cisco gave them the exact same model number (WS-C2924C-XL-EN)! this little tutorial describes how to tell them apart.

After some time I have added a couple more Cisco Config tutorials to JLSNet. The first tutorial briefly explains the different flavors of WAN protocol and how to set up a WAN link using a Cisco router’s Serial interface. The second tutorial describes how to configure a Cisco router for Appletalk routing. If there is anyone who would like to write any Cisco tutorials for JLSNet please email me NOW!

Today is the day when I have finally decided that JLSNet news is now to become a blog! A blog or “weblog” is defined as a page with dated entries, so I guess that this page has always been a blog, but my intentions for this page have slightly changed… I now intend to start posting more personal comments in the form of a journal. Such information may be feelings, announcements, brainstorms, events, ideas, general Jimbo updates, links, site news and the usual sort of babble which goes on in most peoples blogs. I have decided to do this to aid me in my continuing efforts to maintain in contact with friends and keeping them up-to-date on my current status. I have also been playing about with the MSN Spaces site which features a blog tool which is integrated into MSN messenger, I have discovered that it can produce a RSS feed and I may attempt to try and integrate it into this JLSNet blog. Those of you who wish to get in contact with me or feel the need to leave feedback should do so by visiting the “Contact” page of the JLSNet site. Here goes…

Today is JLSNet’s 2nd Birthday! Some current site stats… 69 pages, ~2000 visitors each month, 4 makeovers, site referenced in 2 technical papers (other than my 2!), 1 Marmite poll, Google PageRanking of 3/10, 48 site news entries, designed for support on IE and Firefox, has raised $76.26 from Google Ads and had 2 ISP’s. Some news headlines from the birth date of the site… US launch first missiles against Saddam Hussein, many protest and march against war on Iraq. Most distant black hole weighed - it weighs in at one quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) times that of the Earth. Scientists develop a cheap and safe way to detect smuggled nuclear material using cosmic rays. UK house prices have dropped for the first time in two years and the fall is the largest since 1995. The Ganda worm spreads by taking advantage of public interest in the war against Iraq. 2 years! oh, that reminds me the .co.uk domain renewal must be soon!

It has taken a year but one of the other sites I work on, www.langstonechurch.com, is at a state I am happy with. This is the website for the church I belong to and features up-to-date news, church information and, something which I am very proud of, a very classy diary! I may have spent just a little too much time working on this site and I am having to restrict myself a little now, as it does not bring in any money!

JLSNet has been a little neglected over the last few months, I have been a bit busy working on other websites, trying to find jobs, getting offered jobs, turning down jobs and then trying to find jobs again! Although some good has come out of my working on other sites… I am learning a great deal more about the power of using CSS and DIV’s on web pages. The basic rule is “Don’t use tables for layout!” and so JLSNet has had yet another makeover - simpler, cleaner and no tables!

Not a great deal of activity on the JLSNet front, I am currently still busy working on two other websites. I have just completed www.caringforyou.uk.com, and I am very proud of some clever programming I did which enables the creation of dynamic pages, without the use of ASP/PHP/CGI, from only plain HTML and JavaScript. It works by using a kind of ‘include file’ system and parameters passed in through the URL to automatically generate each static HTML page. The Caring For You site is also my first site coded without the use of tables for layout, but, entirly DIV’s and CSS! At Last!! Also played about with favicon.ico on my sites to assign an icon to the site when listed in browser favorites.

JLSNet has had its 3rd makeover! The site has been redesigned to have a more “professional” look and feel but still has exactly the same content. The new design has an improved menu system, banner and logo redesign and a “Piet Mondrian” lines and squares look to the site. The design is still in its early days and is sure to have a few minor tweaks as it has some teathing problems. Please let me know what you think, good or bad?

I am still clinging onto a little bit of University life, I have recently been working along with my old tutor and another student on condencing the NetSwap dissertation down into a technical paper. This paper has been sent off and is currently awaiting approval for presentation at two large computer confrences: the first, at the Computer Conference in San Sebastien, Spain (Dec 2004), and the second at the 1st Thailand Computer Science conference, Thailand (16-17 Dec 2004). These papers can also be found in the Projects section of the JLSNet site. It is also hoped that a new student is to continue on the NetSwap project over the forthcomming year.

All pages on JLSNet have been rezized so they can be viewed easier on lower resolution (800×600) screens without a horizontal scroll bar. I am currently busy working on designing three other websites, www.saunders-architects.co.uk, www.langstonechurch.com and www.caringforyou.uk.com, so JLSNet has not got much going on at present. CCNA statistics page is to be worked on next!

Generating dynamic content of the site pages has been made a little easier - ‘Inserts’ have been created for each of the page side columns (Advert, Search, Photo, Donate etc…), these ‘Inserts’ can be added easily to any pages as required, making page creation more modular. Some interesting results have also been produced by the CCNA test statistics page, further work is planned for the statistics page to display more relavant results.

It is taking a little longer than expected to program the CCNA quiz engine, this is due to two factors… Firstly, I am programming in Perl for the first time and so am a little slow, Secondly, because it is quite a headache working out how to rendomly generate the quiz and produce the marking/answers feedback. Shouldn’t be long now tho.

These tests will be randomly generated and also provide some helpful networking information.

Only a couple of exams to go next week, then I have officially finished university!! Now onto some revision…..

The site has had a small layout re-haul, the tab button images have been changed back to their old cleaner look, background colours have been changed to match the particular section (Home, Cisco, Projects, NS-2). Google Adverts have been added down the side of each page. (It has also been observed that as Google tailors each advert to match the contents of the page it is being displayed on, it has to index the page more often, it is hoped that this may increase the Google rating too).

For some unknown reason I have feared using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) on JLSNet for some time. So I though it about time I had a bash at uning them… it was not very hard and it has now made the site look a great deal tidier and consistent. As a result this also encouraged me to tidy up some more HTML and should make generating new pages for the site easier in the future. Plus did a little image overhaul of menu images.

After a great deal of research into how to ‘entice’ Google to Deep Crawl websites I found a few interesting points out… Creating a super simple sitemap of all site links makes the Google Bots life easier. Getting as many people as you can to link to your site increases site Page Rank, which is the Google rating system.

I have had !huge! problems as I moved the jlsnet.co.uk domain name to another name registrar, the DNS records were screwed, email Lost, WHOIS tag wrong!
