Poll: Should Craig cut off his dreads?

Posted by James Saunders on June 13th, 2007

A friend, Craig Hicks, is to get married to Sarah Wallace sometime later in the year. Craig has had his hair in dreads for a number of years now. Should he cut the dreadlocks off for the wedding?

I have put together a little poll to collect the public vote and comments to help Craig decide whether to give the dreads the chop. Please click here to cast your votes.

Craig has gained the nickname “Sideshow Bob”, and has spent many an evening cultivating and refining his 52 individual dreadlocks. Sarah has gone from originally hating the dreads to becoming quite fond of them and also enjoys twiddling with them.

“Me only have one ambition, y’know. I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see mankind live together - black, white, Chinese, everyone - that’s all.” –Bob Marley

Does he really want to have the dreadlocks on his wedding photos for his grandchilldren to one day laugh at or does he want to look nice and smart?!? Although if Sarah likes them…

  4. Dready Craig Says:

I really dont know what to do!! Im not gonna vote either way.

  5. Graham Says:

    YES
Although I say yes, I only say it because I think that they have had their time and it’s time for something new.

  6. Julie Says:

    YES
I’m fond of the dreads and I don’t think Craig’s grandchildren will necessarily laugh. But I do think it’s time for a change. I miss the traffic light frequency with which Craig used to alter his appearance. He turned up at Devonshire every week and I never knew what colour his hair would be.

  7. Ben Staniford Says:

    NO
In the words of the late great Bob Marley:

“Don’t be afraid of the vulture!
    Grow your dreadlock:
Don’t be afraid of the wolf-pack!
    Rastaman, live up!”

    Keep those natty dreads!!!

  8. Jane Says:

    YES
However, if you’re going to grow them again after, don’t cut them. Be proud of who you are, don’t worry if you look silly in photos, you saw the tent I wore to my wedding!!!

  9. Sarah Wallace Says:

    NO
I’m not sure if i know what to vote, cos i’m not sure if i’ll like his new hair!! plus i’ve got used to the human carpet!!

You’re white, ginger and have dreadlocks… I can only assume this decision was the result of many, many years of heavy drug taking.
    Lose the locks, man!

  17. Richy A. Says:

    YES
Loose the dreads dude… you can always get them done again, but get rid for your wedding!!

  18. Des Bez Says:

    YES
In my opinion you have had the experience now and lived with the cool boyish look for a few years so with such a good reason to, I say go give them the chop and celebrate your new beginning with your wife!
You also look slimmer and more charming without the dreads so give your wife to be the elegant and handsome wedding pics and the best start possible that you both can be proud of. You can always grow them back in years to come but chop them now so that your hair has some time to grow a little bit more before the big day!!! ;o)

  19. Jemily Says:

    YES
Variety is the spice of life. No harm in having a change for the special day! x

  20. Angela Barnes Says:

    NO
I think I prefer him without the deadlocks but that’s probably an age thing - I’m 56. He looks good both ways. The only person he has to please on the day is his fiance. Whatever he looks like doesn’t affect his heart or personality. If he was going to an important interview I think the advice would be to part with them. It’s wrong but piercings and unconvential hair do’s can be offputting to potential employers. Enjoy your wedding with or without the dreaded locks x x

  21. Bob Says:

I actually think you look better without— But you ARE the ginger-dread-man. And I don’t think you should hide your true identity ever— especially not for a wedding! I mean, YOU are getting married, right? Now your clean shaven alter-ego! :)
When do I get my invitation???

You can do a manly ponytail or an “updo” (err, “updude” to make it sound more masculine, perhaps?)

No hats, of course, but something like this…

    http://www.mydreadlocks.com/2007-hairstyle-trend.html

…that takes advantage of dreadlocks accessories.

In any case, you can’t go wrong: you have a nice smile to go with any hairstyle!

Hey honey, this is such a genuine head-scratcher (’scuse the pun). I actually think you should keep them for the wedding :-) I don’t know why, but they seem like an important part of you now and it just sseems right that they ae made guest of honour at the wedding. Maybe… I think I’m officially still on the fence about it really, but my gut instinct is to keep them!
